No-Till Seed Application

No-till farming and no-till seed application is a way of growing crops or increasing the diversity of species in a given area without disturbing the soil through tillage. “No-till” is a technique which increases the amount of water and organic matter(nutrients) in the soil and decreases erosion. Applying seed in this method saves time during busy planting seasons, and can also reduce labor costs. Popular use of no till seed application includes:

  • Agricultural food crops and cover crops
  • Wet Prairie restoration activities
  • Wetland restoration activities
  • Food plots for hunting

How it Works

Prior to beginning operation, a depth gauge is adjusted to control how deeply seeds are planted, and the seed meter is adjusted to control the flow of seed through the drill. No-till drills use a disk opener (a knife or shovel like blade) to cut or slice open the soil. Seeds feed through a tube and press wheels cover the same ground to firm the soil over the seed.  There is minimal impact to the soil and other plant species through this process as compared to tilling.
